I read a question about what we though will be the future of transportation. I read it in a serious website, where my answer below won't be understood. It is kind of a joke, but there is some substance on it.
With the achievement of anitmatter stabilization, gravity would no longer be an issue. In addition, fission will be mastered and adopted as the incumbent source of energy. It will be less expensive to fly than to drive anything. We won't be able to solve the issue with atmospheric friction, which will limit the speed at which we travel. That's not that bad, as it will avoid some people to use hyperspace speed to feel younger each time they see an acquaintance.
To avoid accidents in the short-altitude range, travel-capsules will be monitored by a central system and will communicate with each other. This will avoid collisions and reduce the amount of energy needed. The shortest path will be the geodesic line, most of the time.
Unfortunately, the energy's rate of change will be so high that entropy will increase exponentially — I mean with a even higher exponent than nowadays. Global warming will still be an issue for a while due to aerodynamic friction. Then we will move the cities to the space and use the Earth and other planets as recreational parks and source of prime materials.
Time is the issue, not distance. Many distance barriers have been circumvented by technology.
